I Want it, But I Don't Need it

I have been looking into moving away from PC (Windows/Linux) and switching to a Mac. This decision is solely based on moving away from being a PC gamer, to being a console gamer, and wanting to use something on my laptop that I know will just work.

As much as I like Linux, I run into far too many issues with it (and Windows), to let it fall under the category of it "just working."

Not to mention, I have recently started utilizing my laptop more away from my desk, as I start getting burnt out from sitting there all day for work, and just want a change of scenery.

With that in mind, battery life is becoming something that I would love to have in a new laptop, and using Linux on a gaming laptop doesn't bode much confidence in terms of "long battery life."

In fact, on Windows, I would be lucky if I hit 4 hours of battery life, and Linux, with disabling the dGPU, I am lucky to hit 2 and a half, maybe 3 hours at most.

On the weekdays when I am working most of the day from the desk, this isn't an issue. But on the weekends, when I feel like just lying on the couch in the front room, wanting to use my laptop, I'm limited to having to move back to my desk in order to charge up my laptop.

So, with these thoughts in mind, and with Apple recently having their announcement of the new M3 lineup of chips, my brain is heavily in the mindset of wanting to purchase a new computer.

A WANT, but not a NEED

However, this is only a want and not a need. As much as I want to get a new computer, and I feel that I would heavily benefit from the additional battery life. My current laptop is far from being "underpowered" or providing a fully undesirable experience when I am using it.

It still works great. It runs pretty fast (with an AMD Ryzen 5900HS), and I can still game on it until I get around to purchasing a PS5 and/or Xbox Series X to replace needing the laptop for gaming.

Ultimately, my goal is to move from being a PC gamer, to a console gamer. If that is what I want to do, then I need to ensure that I have the gaming aspect covered before I switch to a computer that doesn't work well with gaming.

What's the point of switching to Mac, if I lose the ability to play some of the games that I am currently enjoying? And needing to pull out my gaming laptop to play those games defeats the purpose of "replacing" it with a Macbook.

So, as much as I want a new Macbook. I don't need a new laptop just yet.

I will likely try to run this laptop into the ground or hold out until the 5-year mark before switching over to Apple.

Hopefully, by then (2025/2026), I will get my hands on consoles for gaming, and I can upgrade my laptop worry free. And by then, I'm sure the M4/M5 Apple chips will be a lot faster than the recently announced M3 chips!

Heck, I've been thinking of switching to Apple since I started writing in this blog over a year ago. I've made it this long, how much worse could a few more years be?
